Craft Fair
Our 'Create & Donate' venture was a great success from a financial viewpoint and in fulfilling its aim of highlighting the wealth of creativity in the community. Sincere thanks to all who attended on Sunday and were not slow in purchasing the wide variety of items on offer. Special thanks to everyone who 'created and donated' so generously and of course to our great workers who ensured that the event ran off smoothly. Picture shows final preparations in the hall. See more pictures in our Picture Gallery.

Budding Artists!
Congratulations to the talented dozen who recently took brush in hand under the tuition of Ann Barry for a 4 week art class. They claimed to be complete beginners, but there is obviously a lot of hidden talent evident in the end products (pictured). The proceeds of the class went into the 'Create & Donate' fund.

Annual General Meeting
The following were appointed at the recent AGM of Birdhill Tidy Village Association:
Presidents: Fr John O'Keeffe, Ted Moynihan, Martin O'Brien
Chairperson: Majella Foley-Friel
Vice-Chair: Denis Floyd
Joint Secretaries: Terry Griffith & Gráinne Delaney
Treasurer: Paddy Barry
Ast Treasurer: Donnchadh Floyd
PRO: Anne Barry
Youth Liason Officer: Margaret Hogan

The committee will be finalised in the coming weeks. A variety of sub-committees will also be put in place to deal with different social events and Tidy Towns categories.

Energy Scheme
Work on the Community Energy Scheme has now been completed with almost €200,000 spent on retro-fitting 22 houses in the locality along with the community hall. Works carried out included fitting doors and windows, insulation, installing stoves, upgrading heating controls, etc. Everyone has praised the overall efficiency with which the scheme was carried out. It is hoped to continue with another scheme next year.
Duncan Stewart visited Birdhill recently to do some recording for his Eco Ireland programme on RTE. He met representatives of our local Energy Group along with reps from other similar groups in North Tipperary. Pictures below show some of the recording in progress. The programme will air in the New Year.

Bus Service in Birdhill

Bus Éireann has announced that its service through Birdhill will cease from 14th September 2014

Is this something which our community should be concerned about?

Will we be disadvantaged because of the decision?

Should we demand that the existing bus service will continue?

A Public Meeting to discuss the implications for the community and consider possible action will be held in Birdhill Community Hall on Wednesday 10th September, commencing at 8.00pm

All members of the community and the wider hinterland are invited to attend

  • We had the unveiling of the newly-created mural in the park on Mon 19th. The mural depicts the story of "Oisín agus an tÉan" - the tale of how Birdhill got its name. Sincere thanks to artist Anne Barry whose diligence has produced a veritable masterpiece of which we can all be proud. Thanks to the members of the Youth Club who were also part of this wonderful creation.

  • Ciara Floyd of Birdhill Youth Club raised the Tidy Towns flag on the Village Green on Monday evening to signify a new season of work and community endeavour. We look forward to lots of support in maintaining high standarsds in Birdhill. Monday 26th is 'planting night' and on subsequent Mondays we will get together for weeding, cleaning, etc. We would welcome the assistance of young and old.

  • A new Interpretation Board has been erected in the Park giving details of some of the diverse forms of life which can be found in the Pond.

  • Our Pollagh Walk had to be postponed on this Sat morning due to the inclement weather. The walk with Albert Nolan has been rescheduled for Friday 30th May at 7.30pm

The past weekend was a very successful one for Birdhill Tidy Towns. We participated in the parades in Newport on Saturday and in Ballina/Killaloe on Monday and came away with the Best Overall float on both days. Our theme was "Celebrating 100 Years of Birdhill Co-op Creamery." Many thanks to all who took part in the parades and who provided various items which helped to create an authentic display.
